Seven Helpful Tips When Moving Cross Country

February 6, 2024 by

While relocating to a new place is fun and exciting, the process of moving is difficult, tedious and expensive. Moving is made even harder if you’re relocating to an area that’s on the other side of the country. Follow these seven tips to make your move a bit easier.

1. Now is the time to downsize. Whether you can clean out your closet and get rid of clothes you never wear or you can scrap that old furniture you’ve been dying to get rid of, do it before you move.

2. Start packing as early as possible. You may not be able to live without utensils for six months, but you can certainly do without your book collection. Pack whatever you can, as soon as you can. Just make sure to leave out the essentials.

3. If you’re shipping some of your items, price shop. Depending on how much you’re shipping, you may want to opt for a shipping company over the post office, or vice versa.

4. If you’re relocating because of your spouse’s job, you may be wondering what you’re going to do for work once you’re settled into your new home. Don’t wait until you’re at your destination to start applying to jobs. Look for work online - just about everything is automated now, anyway.

5. Study maps of your new location. Sure, you’re going to find your way around simply by living there, but why wait to familiarize yourself with the roads? More important than memorizing street names is knowing the different routes to your house and where important places are located. For example, you want to know where the supermarket, hospital and shopping center is in your new hometown.

6. Before you pack up the moving van, inventory your belongings, large and small. If you leave something behind - or think you did - you’re in trouble, because you’re going to be too far from home to fix the problem. Also, taking inventory means that you’ll know the item you misplaced is in the house somewhere and that you didn’t forget it.

7. Figure out how you’re going to get you and your stuff to your new home. Are you going to ship your belongings and your car and take a flight? Are you going to sell your car and buy a new one when you get to your destination? Are you driving a moving van across country?
