Little-Known Expert Moving Tips
December 4, 2023 by Rosie Davenport
Moving to Florida is stressful and often expensive. Proper preparation is necessary to make it as smooth as possible and avoid any unnecessary faux pas. If you don’t have insurance on all of the items you’re moving right now, get it. Your personal property insurance or renter’s insurance may or may not cover you during a move.
Check with your insurance agent to ensure that coverage is included during the move. It’s also important to make a list of all of your items, with photos, in case something is broken or goes missing. Just like when you’re seeking out contractor estimating software, you might need to shop around if you don’t have comprehensive coverage. Follow these tips for a seamless move.
Preparing for the Worst
Even if you’ve hired a professional moving company, you need to pack properly. There’s probably a free newspaper in your state, so it’s best to pick up a few stacks to wrap valuables in. This is a free option and green-friendly. Bubble wrap is also usable but comes at a cost.
Utilize those extra blankets and winter coats to pad the lining of the boxes. Make sure that each box is clearly labeled with what’s inside. You don’t need the expensive, professional moving boxes where you can check off items. Getting quality boxes for free from your local grocery stores works just as well.
Start Multi-Tasking
Moving is the perfect time for a little spring cleaning. Donate, recycle or give away what you really don’t need. All of those half-empty bottles of lotion under the bathroom sink are just going to cause you trouble. It’s especially important to leave behind anything that’s prone to leaking.
Once you move, you’re going to have enough tasks waiting. Get everything cleaned and washed before moving. No one wants to deal with dirty laundry or dusty dishes when they’re setting up a new home. If you’re going to want your bedding or curtains dry cleaned, get it taken care of before you pack.
Save on Moving Costs
If you’re going with a professional moving company, shop around. Some companies charge per step if you have staircases while others don’t. This is a crucial question to ask and might be a deal breaker. It’s often more affordable to go with local companies than the big corporations.
However, if you can rally your friends, it’s possible to do it yourself. Carefully consider if it’s worth the trouble. It’s going to take much longer to load and unload the truck than if you hire professionals. Also remember that if you’re making a big move, your friends will be there to help you load the truck but you’re going to be on your own when you reach your final destination.
