Choosing a Florida Moving Company
July 9, 2012 by Rosie Davenport
As young adults fresh out of college, our friends took turns helping one another move to Florida. Back then, a move involved a bed, a couch, a few milk crates, and a stereo. Things change as we grow older, and when it is time to move the family into a new home, it is time to trust your cherished belongings to a professional Florida moving company. Choosing the right company is an important task, but does not have to be too complicated.
Get A Few Estimates
You will find that there are a lot of moving companies in most metropolitan areas. It is not wise to choose the one at the top of the list and move on. For best results, you should talk to several companies and ask for estimates for your move. A reputable company will ask a lot of questions before giving you an estimate, including the distance you are moving and what needs to be moved. Many will want to tour your current home and look at what needs to be done.
The Cheapest Is Not Necessarily The Best
Once you get your estimates, list your top choices, according to their rates. Picking the cheapest estimate from this list could ultimately backfire if you stop your research here. Take the time to check out your lowest bids with the Better Business Bureau and run a search on each Florida moving or storage service online. This way, you should be able to access some feedback from others who have utilized them. In fact, if one company offers a particularly low rate, you can almost count on added costs arising on the day of the move.
Check Out Licensing
Your mover may be licensed to move in the state in which you currently reside, but remember that each state has its own regulations for moving companies. If you are moving to a different state, you will need to check out the regulations in that state as well, to ensure that your mover is or can be licensed to move you to that state. If you miss this step and your property is stolen or damaged, you may have little or no recourse.
Special Needs
When you talk to potential movers, be sure to highlight any special needs that could demand special tools or vehicles on the day of the move. These would include a piano, a particularly fragile antique piece of furniture, or a car that may need to be towed. These are all items that may drive up an estimate or even disqualify some movers from eligibility for your move.
Talk To Your Friends And Neighbors
The best referrals always come from those you know personally. When you choose a moving company, be sure to talk to those around you about their experiences and those experiences of their own friends and family. By choosing a company that has been recommended by someone you trust or a company with a local presence, you are increasing your odds of finding a truly reliable resource.
