Moving Made Easy

March 27, 2012 by

Moving to Florida is one of the most stressful events we go through in our lifetime. The combination of lack of sleep, tired muscles and the stress of packing and unpacking is a lot for anyone to deal with. Fortunately, there is such a thing as an easy moving experience. This article will help take the stress out of your next move and give you and your family peace of mind as you begin the moving process. Here are five moving techniques that will make your next move the easiest you’ve ever done:

1. Start the Purge

Before you start packing everything, go through your stuff and purge any unnecessary items before the Florida movers arrive. If you haven’t worn it, seen it or used it over six months, then it doesn’t go with you. You’ll have the peace of mind knowing that you have rid yourself of anything that’s not useful. Any items you are not taking with you can be donated to a local thrift store; or, if you want to make some money from your old stuff, sell it on Craigslist or hold a moving out sale.

2. Organization and Time Management

Whether you’re moving out of a small apartment or an enormous house, give yourself lots of time to pack. Begin with developing a ‘moving’ schedule, with the target move out date written on a calendar. On the schedule indicate how much time you think you’ll need to pack up each room – and be sure to stick to the schedule. Give yourself more time than you think for packing so that when moving day arrives, you won’t be throwing stuff haphazardly into boxes or garbage bags, which greatly increases the odds of breaking your possessions.

After you’ve developed your schedule, it’s time to check your supplies. What moving supplies do you already have (suit cases, boxes, etc.), and what do you still need to get? In your moving supply kit you will need scissors, tape, and permanent markers so that you know the contents of a box and what room it’s from. If you need a few extra boxes, just visit your local grocery store to stock up.

3. Moving Options

This is the most important step in the process. How will you be moving?

If you’re going to use movers or rent a vehicle, then get a quote from at least three difference companies to see who has the best rates, value, and service. Do your research on prospective companies by looking on their website, searching online for comments from other clients, and by talking to friends, family and co-workers about their own experiences with the companies you’re interested in. When approaching your pick, feel free to go meet with them personally and discuss your moving needs. If possible have a company representative visit your home so you two can discuss the move, any special requirements, and concerns – and then be sure to sign a contract that covers everything you discussed. When the moving day arrives, have a copy of the contract with you. That way, if anything happens you can discuss it with them immediately to address any concerns.

4. Friends & Family

When moving day arises, lots will be going on, and you’ll be pulled in many different directions. Don’t be afraid of asking your friends and family for assistance, whether you need help looking after any small children or pets, lifting furniture, listening to your concerns and feelings, or unpacking. Be sure to say thank you for their help, and budget yourself extra money for ordering take out and drinks. This is a nice way of enjoying the first night in your new home with friends and family.

5. It’s Normal to Feel Emotions

Moving is not only tiring physically but it’s also mentally exhausting. If you’ve lived in your home for any length of time then you’ll understand this. It’s normal to have a wide range of emotions – happiness, joy, anxiety, and fear. Packing up your life and starting a new one is a major change, so be sure to talk to a friend or your spouse about these feelings. If you and your spouse are moving together, then chances are they will be feeling the same emotions that you are. After the move is done and the unpacking is over, treat yourself to an activity that the whole family will enjoy. Moving to a new city? Then now’s a great time to start exploring the area in more detail and see what attractions you’ll get to enjoy while living in your new home.

Remember, moving is always chaotic. Last minute accidents and, confusion are bound to happen and that’s okay. You’re now armed with the skills and knowledge to address these hiccups and enjoy starting a new life in your new home.
